Blog Post #5 The Guardians of Knowledge; Interacting with Current Events

Librarians are considered guardians of knowledge. Therefore, it is very important that they are able to read news discerningly, search for information, make connections, and be able to compare the information they found, so they can be sure the knowledge they guard is as correct as possible!

 Part 1: Current Events:

Find a current article in a print newspaper or an online newspaper about something that is happening in Canada or the world that is of interest to you personally, or that you think is a significant event.

Use a credible news source.

Post a link to the article or take a picture of it. Summarize the article in your own words.

Personal Reflection: Explain why you think the event or issue described in the article is important. How does this affect you/us/our world? Use quotes from the article to support your ideas. Post to your blog. This part should be at least 500 words.

Find at least 2 other articles on this same issue and post the links to them.

Comparison: Are there any differences in how these three articles discuss the issue? Do you see different biases or different POVs? Do some leave some details out and others add more? Etc.

Part 2: New Discovery/New Study:
Find a current article in the  newspaper about a new study or a new discovery. Post a link to the article. Summarize the article in your own words and post to your blog.

Personal Reflection:
In your opinion, what impact does this study/discovery have on our world now or in the future?
How will the findings affect you/us/our world? Discuss your views on the topic. Use quotes from the article to support your opinions. Post to your blog.

Find at least 2 other newspaper articles on this topic and post the links.

Comparison: Are there any differences in how these three articles discuss the issue? Do you see different biases or different POVs? Do some leave some details out and others add more? Etc.

Hint: newspapers like Vancouver Sun, Globe and Mail, New York Times, and websites like BBC, CNN, CBC are all good places to start!
